Ian Thomas
Extension Scientist
Associate degree in Viticulture and Winemaking, Graduate Certificate Agricultural Science (Food Sustainability)
Ian has had a diverse career spanning food, wine, agriculture, and climate science. He has worked as a cook, winemaker, vineyard manager, agricultural extension professional, and climate impacts researcher, and also spent three years programming robots for cutting applications.
Raised in the Wimmera, Ian was exposed early to agriculture and the wine industry, which ultimately shaped his career path. He has since managed agricultural properties in Australia, Canada, and France, with a strong ongoing focus on sustainability.
Over the past five years, Ian has worked in agricultural extension, helping Australian farmers across horticulture, viticulture, and broadacre systems apply climate and agricultural science in practical ways. Prior to joining Cesar, he worked at CSIRO researching the impacts of climate change on Australian agriculture.
More recently, Ian has focused on developing digital information products and decision-support tools tailored to the needs of Australian agricultural producers.
Outside of work, he enjoys cooking, board games, and hiking.
