cesar Director awarded Victorian Young Tall Poppy Science Award

16 Nov 2012

cesar Director, Dr Paul Umina, has been named as one of two recipients of the Victorian Young Tall Poppy of the Year 2012. The prestigious annual Young Tall Poppy Science Awards recognise the achievements of Australia’s outstanding young scientific researchers and communicators.

Dr Paul Umina was honoured to receive the award in recognition of his research and communication endeavours to help Australian farmers to achieve a balance between profitability and environmental sustainability by developing new ways to combat insect pests.

Part of the Tall Poppy Campaign, a national initiative funded by the Australian Institute of Policy and Science, the Young Tall Poppy Awards are presented state by state in recognition of outstanding achievement in research across all disciplines of science.  The Victorian Awards were held in Melbourne at the bio21 Institute on 13th November 2012.

As a major award winner, in the next year Paul will participate in education and community outreach programs to inspire school students and the broader community about the possibilities of science. This involves a range of science promotion activities for school students, teachers and the broader community, including visits to schools, educational seminars, workshops, public talks and other activities.
